Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
