Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
